I.Purpose

After the Wenchuanearthquake occurred, many warmhearted and helpful volunteers from differentparts of China would like to offer a helping hand, so 5.12 Charity Associationwas founded to help these volunteers to serve affected families and help morepeople in an effective way.

II.Profile

At first, 5.12United Medical Team was consist of 32 members, including members of medicalteams from Shenzhen, Tangshan and Mianyang, several members of Special PoliceForce and Special Force as well as Tibetan soldiers who were our first group ofvolunteers.

Between May 13 and17, volunteers from Tangshan kept working for three days and 4 nights, and outfrom the ruins, they dug out 30 living persons, 9 dead bodies, a cat and a dog.

After the end ofdisaster relief work, our responsibilities changed and the name 5.12 UnitedMedical Team could not represent who we were and what we did anymore. SinceJan. 1, 2009, our volunteers have visited poor mountainous areas in HebeiProvince, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Gansu Province, Garzê TibetanAutonomous Prefecture and Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, offered financial support to over 100 children in these areas to help themregain access to education, and the first group of beneficiaries we supportedover the past 9 years have graduated from universities and joined theworkforce. Our volunteers are moving forward on the journey of charity with determinationto keep moving even if what they do can change the fate of a child only.

In the secondonline meeting held on June 16, 2008, 5.12 United Medical Team was renamed 5.12(We Have Love) Volunteer Charity Association and decided to engage in financialsupport to students with a focus on 5 provinces in West China.

Introduction to Project

Education can makea difference. In my visit to Daliangshan in 2017, I came to realize this it istrue. Backward thought is more an urgent problemrequired to be solved than deficiency in supplies. Low awareness of educationamong parents, poor teaching conditions and short period of service of teachersare common problems. For children in remote mountainous areas, frequent changeof teachers is just a part of their life at school. To help these poor areasretain more good teachers, 5.12 Charity Association intends to set up WatchmenFoundation and 5.12 Teaching Team to form a Literacy Class. We will equip severalpilot schools with computers and network, and 5.12 Teaching Team will give videolessons to parents and children on a regular basis and raise awareness ofeducation among parents to turn these mountainous area into a place wherechildren can have their dreams.

Our Commitment

We are a civil charity organization of volunteers (not a group),everyone is equal, we have no leaders but organizers only, and everyone can bean organizer and a leader of charity. We have no funds, but we can worktogether to attract more like-minded people to join us, raise fund for eachcharity activity to help more children in mountainous areas. Charity is notabout how much money you donate, but how many people you mobilize to engage incharity practice. We promise to direct all support we receive to students inpoor mountainous areas, spend all the funds we raise to offer financial supportto students and schools in these areas. We have launched financial supportprograms in several areas, but we will earmark funds for their specific purposes, keep and disclose online a detailed record of sources and purposes of thesefunds.
